Alena Buyx is Professor of Ethics in Medicine at the Technical University of Munich and heads the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine. She holds a doctorate in medicine and researches biomedical ethics, justice and solidarity. She is a member of high-ranking ethics committees, was Chair of the German Ethics Council (2020-2024) and has been a member of the Federal Government Expert Council on Health and Resilience since 2024.

About the speaker

Prof. Dr. med. Alena Buyx is Director of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at TUM and W3 Professor of Ethics in Medicine. A doctor of medicine with degrees in philosophy and sociology, she conducts interdisciplinary research into biomedical ethics, including justice, innovation and public health. Among other things, she was Chair of the German Ethics Council (2020-2024), a member of the Leopoldina and has been part of the Federal Government's Expert Council on Health and Resilience since 2024. Buyx publishes in leading journals, raises millions in third-party funding and has received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2024). She previously worked at Harvard University, University College London and the UK Ethics Council, among others.
